History of the Molí Del Mig

The origins of the hotel Molí del Mig date back to the 15th century, when the Pons family was authorised to use water from the river to build several mills. The water from the Ter came through the Rec del Molí canal, which was diverted at Resclosa d’Ullà and fed 3 mills: Molí de Dalt, Molí del Mig and Molí de Baix. The mill was originally used for milling flour, and feudal ownership was maintained until 1870.

The mill became uninhabited in the second half of the 20th century and was only used as an agricultural warehouse until 1999, when it was acquired by the Pellissa-Vaqué family to convert it into a hotel.

Refurbishment

The old building, in very poor condition, was refurbished between 2000 and 2003, when all its cultural elements of interest were conserved. The oldest part of the old mill has been converted into a museum-room, where you can see the runnel that feeds the mill and information panels explain how it works and its history. The coat of arms of the lords of Sarriera, former feudal owners, can be seen on the door leading to the garden, formerly the main door. The stone vault has been preserved in the rectangular section that was added later (17th-18th century) and used as cattle stables- This has now been converted into a spa. On the outside, the sundial dating from 1783 has also been restored.

Between 2003 and 2006, the old mill was extended with the construction of all the current annexes (restaurant, multi-purpose room, outdoor suites, etc.).

Architecture and awards

On an architectural level, the idea was to emphasise the contrasts between the old and the new, seeking clarity in the architectural language and prioritising integration into the landscape.

In the words of the architect Josep Mº Deulofeu, the purpose of the renovation was always “to adapt to the old building, respecting its structures and integrating the new ones with them to perfection, always keeping the mill as the protagonist and placing it at the centre”.

In 2006 this refurbishment and extension of the Molí del Mig was a finalist in the Girona Region Architecture Prizes, awarded by the Girona branch of the College of Architects of Catalonia
